In 2021, Chevron El Segundo became one of the first refineries in the United States to co-process biofeedstock to create sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). The initial test batch of SAF was estimated to lower carbon emissions by 59% on a lifecycle basis compared to traditional jet fuel.
